Child Abuse:
In 2020, there were 6,473 reports of child maltreatment made to Child Protective Services in Nassau County. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the total lifetime cost of child maltreatment is $124 billion per year.

Domestic Violence/ Intimate Partner Abuse
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of domestic violence in their lifetime.

Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime

In 2020 alone, there were:
•6,197 calls to the Domestic Violence Hotline.
•13,267 reports of Domestic Violence to the Nassau County Police Department.
•1,504 arrests for Domestic Violence
•Nearly 5,000 victims of domestic violence receiving services at Nassau County domestic violence agencies; The Safe Center, Circulo de la HispanidadDomestic Harmony.

20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.

Women aged 16-24 experience the highest per capita rate of intimate partner violence, triple the national average.

The annual cost of domestic violence to the US economy is more than $8.3 billion. This cost includes medical care, mental health services, and lost productivity (e.g., time away from work).

Rape/ Sexual Assault
1 in 5 women and 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape.

1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.

93% of all child victims of sexual assault know their perpetrators; a member of their family (34%), or someone known or trusted by the family (59%).

Human Trafficking
In 2019, our Human Trafficking Department served over 500 youth and adult victims of human trafficking.

83% percent of victims in confirmed sex trafficking cases in the U.S. are U.S. citizens.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Long Island is among the top 20 human trafficking jurisdictions in the country.

These astounding statistics need to change.
