Courtroom Advocacy

• A Safe Center Advocate is available daily in Nassau County Family Court to provide emotional and psychological support in the often grueling process of obtaining an Order of Protection
• The advocates provide information about domestic abuse, the court procedures, and the use and limitations of protective orders and discuss the importance of and help clientscreate a safety plan
• The advocates are available to accompany clients into the courtroom, which can be an intimidating place for victims
• They make referrals to the legal department for a free consultation with a lawyer to obtain information about legal rights or options, get a legal assessment, and/or referrals to other services
• The court advocates can also accompany clients for interviews with the Assistant District Attorney or grand jury/trial testimony
