Hospital Advocacy (SAFER Volunteer)  CLICK HERE

Our Spring 2024 training class begins on Monday, May 6th, 2024! Applications will be accepted from March 1st to April 12th.

After a 40-hour training, SAFER volunteers will provide accompaniment, advocacy, and support to child and adult victims of sexual abuse, domestic/family violence, and sex trafficking in the emergency room as they receive acute medical care. Thirty hours (30) of training are provided in-person at The Safe Center and the remaining 10 hours are provided in a virtual, self-paced format. Volunteers are scheduled to be on-call for 12-hour periods to assist victims at any of the local Nassau County hospitals. Volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of two shifts (12 hours each) per month and must arrive at the hospital within 45 minutes of receiving a call. Advocates must participate in 10 hours of education and training every year after initial training, provided free in various formats. This program requires a minimum commitment of one year.  Click here for FAQ’s.

CAPS at The Safe Center
CAPS at the Safe Center utilizes volunteers to work directly with children and youth in Nassau and Suffolk elementary, middle and high schools. Volunteers are provided with free training to present classroom workshops about child abuse, bullying, online safety and sexual harassment in Nassau and Suffolk counties.  All supplies and materials are provided, and we ask volunteers to commit to present to one 45-minute class a month.  There is no teaching experience required and many of our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds.

Special Events Volunteer
The Development Team needs volunteers to help organize and work at our special events. The Safe Center has multiple major events each year including our 5k Race, Swing For Hope Golf Outing, and Annual Gala. Volunteers help with event set up/breakdown, check in, raffles, silent auction, and more. Volunteers are recruited as needed for events.

We also are looking for volunteers who are willing to donate services in kind for the following opportunities at events:

Other Volunteer Opportunities:

Community Outreach
Working with The Safe Center’s Education Department, volunteers work to end against family violence through awareness and education. Volunteers represent the agency at health and/or information fairs to provide information on programs and services, as well as information on domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, dating violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse.

Court Advocate
The Safe Center’s Family Court Advocacy Project and Dedicated Domestic Violence Courts Advocacy Programs, assistance is provided at the Court on a daily basis to victims of domestic violence by the paralegal/court advocates, assisted by trained volunteers and student interns.

In Family Court these advocates assist the victims, on a one-on-one basis, in filing the petition for an immediate order of protection and offer emotional and psychological support during the often-grueling process of applying for an Order of Protection. The advocates inform clients about the court’s legal procedures and proceedings and explain the options and services available to the victims. They explain the types of relief that can be requested from the judge. The victims are thus able to obtain information about the use and limitations of protective orders; and receive tips and information about how to make their best presentation to the court, plus additional knowledge about domestic violence services and other social services referrals.

In addition, the advocates accompany the petitioner into the courtroom, which can be of great value to a fearful victim of abuse. The advocates make referrals to The Safe Center for one or more of the many other services available to clients, and also to other Nassau County social service agencies. The Director of Legal Services trains and supervises these advocates and is available for consultation to any petitioner desiring information about her legal rights and/or a legal assessment or referral. Volunteer Court Advocates are required to commit to serving at least one day a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Enough Abuse Trainer
The Enough Abuse Campaign is an awareness-raising and prevention initiative designed to reduce the occurrence of child sexual abuse in the community. After two days of training, volunteers become trained facilitators who deliver educational presentations to parents, professionals and concerned adults that focus on identifying warning signs that may suggest an adult is a danger to children or may indicate that a child has been abused. Volunteers are asked to deliver a minimum of two trainings a year, participate in quarterly meetings and find a minimum of two locations for the program to be presented on Long Island.
